Cucharillo
Oaxaca diminutive variant of cucharilla. Same plant (Dasylirion lucidum Rose) and same commercial category as Cucharilla in Oaxaca. Orthographic and morphological variant used interchangeably in some Sierra Sur villages.
Regions: Oaxaca, Sierra Sur, Miahuatlán, Sola de Vega
Cucharillo is an Oaxaca diminutive variant of cucharilla, used in some Sierra Sur and Miahuatlán villages as a near-synonym. Both names refer to Dasylirion lucidum Rose, the southern Oaxacan endemic Dasylirion species that sits well outside the Sotol DO geography. The two names operate as orthographic and morphological variants of each other rather than as taxonomically distinct labels: a producer who calls the plant cucharilla one season and cucharillo the next is naming the same population.
The diminutive -illo is Spanish for "little little" (a diminutive of an already-diminutive noun), and the form survives in some local usage patterns where it indicates a smaller-leaved or earlier-harvest specimen rather than a different species. This usage is informal, varies village to village, and does not correspond to any consistent botanical distinction.
Commercially, cucharillo is rarer than cucharilla on bottle labels, but the bottles that use it carry the same regulatory and category structure. Because D. lucidum is not one of the two species (D. cedrosanum and D. duranguensis) named in NOM-159-SCFI-2004 and because Oaxaca is not a Sotol DO state, cucharillo bottlings cannot use the Sotol DO label and instead carry either Cucharillo, Cucharilla, or Destilado de Dasylirion as their category descriptor. The regulation chapter walks through the species-versus-state interaction in detail.
Ambiguity level: low. In the Oaxaca usage area, both cucharilla and cucharillo refer to D. lucidum; the variation is between names for the same plant, not between plants. The relevant cross-reference is the longer Cucharilla (Oaxaca) entry, which is the canonical statement of the species attribution and the commercial category.
